opening may 2015

The museum is not open to the public yet, but you can still get involved in our fundraising events throughout the year. Help us bring this vision to life!

The Children’s Museum of Siouxland is envisioned as a family-oriented, hands-on children’s museum with emphasis on providing educational value while fostering a child’s creativity and imagination. Targeting children ages 6 months – 10 years, the museum is committed to reaching out to all children and ensuring a safe and stimulating environment.

  • Plans include an over 15,000 square foot building: 8,000 square feet dedicated to exhibits, 2,000 for a traveling gallery/flex space, and 1,200 for classroom and education (remaining space is allocated to office, storage, bathrooms, etc.)
  • The Capital Campaign goal is $6,000,000 with a $500,000 endowment included
  • All exhibit pieces focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) learning with hands on education through play VS. traditional museums focused on preservation and conservation
  • An estimated 50,000 visitors create a 2 million dollar economic impact to downtown Sioux City for the first year of operation (based off of the standard economic impact formula provided by the Economic Development Department)
  • The Children’s Museum is an independent 501 (c) 3 organization and is privately funded. This project is strongly supported by the city but will not be a department of the city
  • Programming collaboration with local organizations is planned. Groups include: Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center, the Railroad Museum, LAMB Theatre, Sioux City Community Theatre, The Sioux City Conservatory of Music, the Public Museum, Art Center and Sioux City Community Schools
  • This project is UNIQUE to the area and does not duplicate the mission of any other organization
  • Tourism increases with reciprocal memberships from other museums as part of the ACM (Association of Children’s Museums)
  • Estimated admission fees are $7 per person with $85 family memberships and discounted group rates available, along with free events planned throughout the year
  • Free attached parking is planned adjacent to the entrance
  • We plan to pursue new construction on the original site (located at 623 Pearl and 622 Water) while maintaining the original masonry façade along Pearl Street
  • New construction will be completed for the same budget as the original project budget
  • We have 100% board commitment to the Capital Campaign
  • More than 30 percent of children’s museums are part of a downtown revitalization project. (Based on ACM data)
  • Communities with active children’s museums consistently score highly on standardized tests while showing trends with higher community-wide percentages of completion of secondary and collegiate education. (Based on ACM data)
